$ sh add_patch.sh nova 0003-meant-to-fail.patch

This will fail and leave the repo in a clean state.

$ sh add_patch.sh cinder 0001-add-cinder-bar.patch

This will work and leave one modified file (cinder/patches/series) and tell you how to commit your patch.
